Badla Movie Review | Amitabh Bachchan | Taapsee Pannu | Sujoy Ghosh

Movie: Badla

Rated: 4.0/5.0

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu

Director: Sujoy Ghosh

Every Friday morning when I go to watch a film, it is a frightening experience. See, it looks picture perfect- I get to see so many films but most of them turn out to be a difficult experience as well because a bad film, right in the morning can give you a headache that you might not be able to recover from throughout the day! But today I am a happy person. Because I got to watch Badla and man, it was such a great experience.

So Sujoy Ghosh’s Badla is the official remake of Contratiempo or The Invisible Guest. I stayed away from the original so that I can enjoy the storyline. Now after I have watched the film, a short synopsis does suggest that the story is similar to that of the Spanish original. But what I cannot absolutely get over about this film is the way it has been executed. This is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that does not go wrong at any point at all.

The film about a young business entrepreneur, Naina Sethi who claims to be framed in the murder of a photographer called Arjun, with whom she had an extramarital affair. Her lawyer appoints this man called Badal Gupta who is a specialist in staging witnesses and who has never lost a case in his entire life! What follows is a series of narration of events that might or might not be true.

This game of might and might nots is what makes the film a must watch. What is true, and what you have believed till now was at all real is the question that will keep you hooked to the seat. The film is only about the interaction between Taapsee Pannu and Amitabh Bachchan and boy, never could I have imagined that this could turn so hauntingly gripping. Taapsee Pannu is on her top game right now. She is strong and holds her presence, so much that at some frames she even outdoes Amitabh Bachchan. Her character Naina changes shade and how and it is Taapsee who can make you gasp while watching the film.

Amitabh Bachchan would find redemption with Badla after Thugs of Hindostan. He is just being the brilliant actor that he always is and the film gives him free road to just play with his character however he wants to. And the result, as always is brilliant here. His brilliance comes off in one scene which would be a ,major spoiler to give but in short, he holds his emotions back and there is just a speck of it that escapes from him. This nuanced performance could not have been given justice had it not been Amitabh Bachchan!

But the person who surprised me here was Amrita Singh. She comes somewhere in the middle, has very few scenes but wins every frame. She is friendly and jolly but we see her character change and it was a treat to watch her after so long.

Sujoy Ghosh has shown that his forte is thrillers. Yes, this film might not touch the benchmark that Kahaani had set, but this is brilliantly made. He has also written the adapted screenplay and the dialogues and he is just being his talented self in this picture itself. The film is proof that he has given the actors their own spaces to play with the character, but had enough hold that not even one scene looks extra or even allows another thought to come to your head. Hints are dropped when needed and restraint is maintained where it is most necessary. In short, he is one of the invisible stars of the film.

This film is a must watch. Go alone or go with your friends and family, but do not miss this one.
